Fight the Signs of Aging - Even in your Twenties

A simple internet search will bring up a variety of tips and tricks to help you “Fight the Signs of Aging.” While people look for a magical cure – and there are a few we will share later in the post – I am reminded of the old saying “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”

If you’ve noticed more spots on your face lately, it’s likely the result of too much sun. Even though they’re called age spots, we are now seeing them on patients in their 20s and 30s. The reason? Too often people are ignoring sunscreen.

Sunscreen is your skin’s #1 defense. Even the Skin Cancer Foundation now recommends use year round! That might seem excessive, but consider this: Every day your skin is getting blasted by ultraviolet radiation, specifically UVA – which makes up 95% of sun exposure. UVA rays are present with relatively equal intensity during all daylight hours throughout the year, and can penetrate clouds and glass. UVA plays a major part in skin aging and wrinkling. Sunscreen really should be worn everyday. (At Werschler, Aesthetics, we carry many different sunscreens, including a completely organic line, to meet your unique sunscreen needs.)

We all love to get as much sun as possible over the summer. Unfortunately, more than warm memories remain when your tan fades. It doesn’t take a lot before you do actual irreversible harm to your skin. Even in as few as five days skin develops brown spots and wrinkles, but there’s a more important danger… Every single time you burn, you double your risk of skin cancer.

A common misconception is that African Americans and those with darker skin are protected, but unfortunately they’re not. They’re still getting UVA, which is 95% of the sun exposure that we get. So darker skinned people still can get cancer, wrinkles and photo damage.

Treating wrinkles and age spots.

If you already have spots and wrinkles on your skin, here are some effective treatments.

Lasers – A laser treatment combined with a topical medication can be expensive and involve some down time – but the results are worth it!

Chemical peels – Chemical peels can also help, and they can be combined with skin care products purchased at Werschler Aesthetics for enhanced results.

Topical treatments – Dr. Werschler recommends using a prescription product, such as Retin A, if it is appropriate for your skin type.  Additionally, one of the SkinMedica Retinol Complex products or Active Serum from iS Clinical can be used to enhance the results of your procedures.
