Healing Stretch Marks

Stretch marks, or striae distensae, are a common problem, affecting a quarter of people during their lifetime, and are twice as prevalent in women than men. Stretch marks are often the result of the rapid stretching of the skin associated with rapid growth or rapid weight changes, but may also be influenced by hormonal changes associated with things like puberty, pregnancy, bodybuilding, hormone replacement therapy, etc.

If we were to take a sample of the affected skin and look at it under the microscope, it would show thinned collagen bundles (the cushioning and youthfulness of the skin) and ragged and diminished elastin fibers.

Any treatment to get rid of these unwanted skin lesions would look to increase dermal collagen and elastin. One great treatment is tretinoin cream or gel, also known by the brand name Retin-A. Additionally, we sell less invasive microneedling rollers for use at home. You could combine a Retin-A regimen with at-home microneedling for a decent 1-2 punch.

Lasers, however, are the most effective option for treating stretch marks. For the early stages of stretch marks, we offer the Cynosure Cynergy laser. Once stretch marks have evolved and become atrophic and white, our preferred laser is the Fraxel Dual. Each of these devices uses invisible laser light to apply thousands of small points of safe, heat-based injuries to the skin. This in turn safely triggers a wound-healing response that activates the cells that make new collagen, called fibroblasts, thereby healing the stretch marks from the inside out.
