How To Protect Your Skin from the Effects of Smokey Air

Most of us know how to take care of our skin during the sunshine months.  The Northwest has some of the best weather for being outside, and we love to take advantage of that. We know to always have sunscreen around, and to limit our exposure to UV rays.  Right now however, air quality is probably something you’re keenly aware of, and protecting your skin from the effects of smog, smoke and general air pollutants is important.

Smog, dirt and dust in the air can clog pores, cause acne and give skin a dull, gray appearance. And free radicals can deplete oxygen in skin cells and decrease collagen production, which leads to wrinkles, fine lines and rough, dry patches. Long-term exposure to air pollution can also cause skin allergies. Fortunately that you’re reading this, we here at Spokane Dermatology and Werschler Aesthetics have some ideas and suggestions to help keep that glow and smoothness to your skin, regardless of the conditions outside.

Wash Your Face

Always an important first step is to wash your face daily, at times when air conditions are really bad, you can also use mineral water to wash up – tap water typically contains chlorine, which can dry out your skin.

Exfoliate once or twice a week

When you have time, try and exfoliate your face once or twice a week, this helps remove dead cells and allows your skin some breathing room to heal and glow.

Don’t Forget the Supplements

Supplements like vitamin C and antioxidants are known to battle free radicals in your body, and when they are winning that battle, they are helping to prevent and reverse damage to your skin.

Stay Hydrated

Hydration plays a key role in keeping your skin healthy, so along with those supplements, make sure you drink plenty or water to enable cell growth and circulation.

Use a Good Moisturizer

Get a good moisturizer for your skin that also provides free radical protection. Free radicals in the air from smog, dirt and dust remove the oxygen in skin cells, causing damage. A good moisturizer hydrates the skin and defends your skin from free radicals and other pollutants.  Here at Spokane Dermatology and Werschler Aesthetics, we have a wide range of moisturizers, and we can help you find the best product for you.

You can’t completely avoid the effects of the air pollution out there, but a good skin regiment can keep that radiance brighter and fresher.   Come into Spokane Dermatology or Werschler Aesthetics and we’ll set you up with the best products and advice in the Inland Northwest.
