The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) closely regulates medical-grade (or pharmaceutical-grade) skincare products. By law, they must contain 99.9 percent of the pure active ingredients that are listed on the label. Before they can be used by the public, there must be scientific evidence showing that the skincare product is beneficial and that it does what is claimed by the manufacturer. That is to say, before a medical-grade skincare product can make it to the market, there are multiple studies completed demonstrating that it actually does what it claims to do.
This is not the case with cosmetic-grade over-the-counter (OTC) skincare products. The cosmetic-grade skincare industry does not have oversight by the FDA, which means a thorough product or ingredient testing is not required and claims of what the skincare product does has no scientific backing.
This is also why medical-grade skincare can only be prescribed by a medical professional. Skincare that is purchased from a department store, chain retailer, or drugstore, is cosmetic-grade and can be sold by anyone. Cosmetic-grade skincare is designed to sit on the surface of the skin so it can be used generically by many people. Medical-grade skincare is been designed to penetrate the epidermis (upper layer of skin) and affect deeper layers of the skin. This is why it is important to purchase skincare from a dermatologist’s office and to get staff recommendations that are tailored to specific needs.
Medical-grade skincare is not always more expensive. Generally speaking, these companies do not spend their money on advertising campaigns, but instead choose to spend that money on research, and quality product development so the investment is often similar in cost.
